with Leslie and/or Mark Degner

Wednesday, 13th November to Sunday, 17th November 2019 - 4 nights

(Outdoor event, with some general review sessions in the evenings - suitable for all levels and any media)

Join Edmonton photographers Leslie and Mark Degner and your host Alan Ernst to discover the other Rockies, at a time of year when few people visit, but sights are as amazing as in any other season...
Leslie and her husband Mark have been offering our successful "ladies only" spring photo workshops and winter tours for a number of years. For more information on your instructors please visit .

This event is classified as a tour
and the date at the beginning of the winter season was chosen to accommodate the many requests for dawn and dusk skies and the combination of open water and ice.

Whatever it takes to get the shot...Bighorn Sheep on Abraham Lake

As the bubbles form Native spiritual site in the valley

We used to call this early winter nature photography tour our "fire and ice" tour, as this is very often a great time for colourful sunrises and sunsets, warm light throughout the day with low angled sun, clear skies, mist rising above the water in the mornings, frozen ponds and ice starting to form on Abraham Lake and our many area rivers. The combination of static ice and moving water makes for dynamic images whereas the frost and patterns in frozen puddles lend themselves to ineresting abstracts.

Most years, this is also the beginning of our "bubble season" on Abraham Lake, which draws photo enthusiasts from all over the world in winter. Mountain tops will be snow covered but valley bottoms may still be dry or have only light snow cover. Note however that conditions are very variable at this time of year, so it is not possible to predict the conditions at that time. Snow or no snow, warm or cold, there is never a shortage of amazing subject matter and good light! There is also a good chance to observe and photograph a variety of wildlife.

This tour is similar in scope to the successful winter tours, now into our 17th season. Flexibility is the name of the game, so participants can optimise their time in the field and return with many stunning images. You should be able to hike short distances over rough terrain (1-2km) with your gear.

Participants will receive a list of equipment suggestions two months before the event. All skill levels are welcome and hands-on instruction is available in the field for those who are looking for this. It is helpful / recommended though, that participants have a basic understanding of photographic principles and are reasonably familiar with the gear they own.
